Depiction of a battle episode: light cavalry officers in blue uniforms and tricorn hats, mounted on bay and gray horses, leading the charge among the volunteers. Fallen soldiers in the foreground, background shrouded in the dust of battle. Typical subject of military reenactments of the late Revolutionary period (1795-1799). Verso with graphite sketches (figure studies) indicating that this is a studio work/study. Image dimensions: 23 × 14 cm — with frame: 38 × 28 cm. Signed lower left: P. Petit (attributable to Pierre Petit-Gérard).
