Louis-Arthur Soclet, sometimes referred to as Arthur-Louis Soclet, was born in 1845 and trained at the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Le Havre, under the direction of Charles Lhuillier. He developed a versatile artistic practice very early on, encompassing oil painting, watercolor, drawing, and caricature. Based primarily in Le Havre, Soclet actively participated in local cultural life and exhibited regularly with the Society of Friends of the Arts of the city. He also contributed to regional publications and stage productions, creating sets and illustrations for the Gaieté Music Hall and the Lyre Havraise, thus demonstrating his involvement in the artistic and social circles of his region. Soclet's work, often genre paintings or portraits, reflects the influence of the pictorial movements of his time, while also conveying a personal perspective on local society and artistic practices. Some of his canvases belonged to prestigious collections, including that of the painter Jean-François Raffaëlli, highlighting the interest in his work within contemporary artistic circles. Louis-Arthur Soclet died in 1900, leaving behind a diverse body of work, primarily held in regional collections, but regularly appearing at auction, attesting to his posthumous influence and the historical and artistic value of his oeuvre.
