Eileen Gray Side Table
Artist: Eileen Gray
The E1027 adjustable side table by Eileen Gray is named after a secret code she created: E for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J being the 10th letter of the alphabet for Jean Badovici), 2 for B (Badovici), and 7 for G (Gray). Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is one of the most influential figures in the history of 20th-century decorative arts and architecture. Her works, now considered Art Deco and design classics, fetch record prices at auction. The E1027 is a re-edition of the table Eileen Gray designed in 1927 for her villa in Roquebrune. In 1924, in collaboration with the Romanian architect Jean Badovici, Eileen Gray began working on the E1027 house. Tasked with furnishing her home, she created this table, highly innovative for its time. Luxury gives way to simplicity and a functional form. The glass top is height-adjustable thanks to a sliding leg. Eileen Gray was one of the first to use tubular steel structures, along with Marcel Breuer, Gerrit Rietveld, and Charlotte Perriand. It is an adjustable, practical piece of furniture, perfectly suited to modern spaces. This side table is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Diameter: 51 cm. Tabletop heights: 87 cm, 82 cm, 78 cm, 73 cm, 68.5 cm, 64 cm, 59.5 cm, 55 cm.
