Napoleon Representative Group
Artist: Salesio
A spelter group depicting Napoleon on the island of Elba, contemplating his dream, signed Luighi Salesio, Italian sculptor (1869-1936). Interpreted as Napoleon Bonaparte in exile in his prison on the island of Elba, wearing his traditional hat, which casts a dejected expression on his hand tucked into a long coat, seated and leaning against the back of a chaise longue, gazing downwards and dreaming of past military glories. A large flag flies above his Imperial Guard soldiers running from clouds overflowing with broken iron bars, covering his window filled with tumbling cannons and distant soldiers amidst atmospheric clouds concealing an electric light fixture. The molded base panel is titled "And the Island of Elba_The Dream_," signed on the right "Salesio."
