Depicting a lively fairground in Agen with entertainers performing for their audience, painted around 1885.
Benjamin Rabu (19th century), French painter and watercolorist, was born in Agen where he studied under François Mainville. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to painting the old quarters, monuments, and daily life of Agen, where he lived and had his studio at 25 rue Molinier. From 1863 onwards, he exhibited extensively in Agen, participated in the Salon des Artistes Français in 1886, and contributed to the organization of numerous artistic events in Agen. A member of the Fine Arts Commission for the 1879 exhibition, he was Secretary General of the 1899 Universal Exhibition. Works are held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Agen.
This canvas, well stretched on its original frame, is in very good condition.
The painting, never cleaned, not soiled, is in very good condition, neither repainted nor repaired; nothing shows up under UV light.
Very small chips in the paint layer, barely visible, marked by the patches on the back (see photos).
