Eugène Robert POUGHÉON (1886-1955)
Female Nude; Study for the Amazons
Circa 1926
61 x 34 cm.
Studio stamp (L.5151) lower left.

This beautiful and large drawing is a preparatory study for one of Robert Pougheon's masterpieces: The Amazons [with blue ribbon], a painting now in a private collection, sold at auction for £1,105,250 in London on June 24, 2009. It could be also a study dor Amazons with Magpies, the central figure having evolved and been repeated in several studies and paintings.

Eugène Robert Pougheon, born in Paris in 1886, studied with Jean-Paul Laurens and Albert Besnard at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as with Charles Lameire at the École des Arts Décoratifs. In 1914, he won the Prix de Rome. His departure for Rome was delayed by the Great War, but he eventually joined the Villa Medici. Along with other residents, such as Jean Dupas, Jean Despujols, and Alfred Janniot, he belonged to the "Rome Group," formed around 1920, which was characterized by both a preservation of academicism and the adoption of the most rigorous modernity of Art Deco.

Pougheon affirmed this affiliation with monumental and geometric figures that contrasted with the idealized environment in which they were placed. His originality lay in his compositions, which were rooted in the academic tradition of history painting, influenced by artists he admired such as David and Ingres, but also, and especially, Puvis de Chavannes.

In the final composition, he playfully mixed classical motifs, such as the Parthenon horse or this Ingresque Venus, with contemporary elements like the bowler hat, the book, or the rifle, adding to the singularity of his work. The painting *The Amazons [with blue ribbon]* is signed and dated 1926, the year of its exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Français. According to Louis Deltour, a specialist on the artist, Pougheon began studying its composition in 1922 and completed it in 1925. This was his last "sent from Rome." At least three sketches are known, along with several preparatory drawings. Some of these are reproduced in the catalogue of the exhibition dedicated to the artist at La Piscine in Roubaix in 2017–2018.
