A Germanic cavalry sword, circa 1600. The blade is typical of Solingen manufacture, a three-fullered model found between the mid-16th and early 17th centuries. The hilt, with its distinctive shape, allows us to date the weapon very early in the 17th century, or even in the last quarter of the 16th century. Therefore, I will cautiously retain the approximate dating of 1600-1620 by comparison with known examples in German museums, but it is possible that this sword is slightly older.
BLADE: After a very short ricasso, it has a flattened hexagonal cross-section with two edges. Three fine fullers occupy the first third of the central face.
Blade length = 90.8 cm, width at the ricasso 3.4 cm, thickness at the ricasso 6.4 mm. The balance point is 12.5 cm from the guard, which is typical for a cavalry sword.
GUARD : Hand protection is provided by a convex shell forged from a single piece withe the center of the guard. The two quillons are strongly curved towards the blade. According to some authors, these strong, highly curved quillons could block an opponent's blade, or even break it. The knuckle bow ends near the pommel without being attached to it.
POMMEL : It is shaped like a fluted bulb and terminates in a flattened button to which the tang of the blade is riveted. The shape of this pommel is typical of the second half of the 16th century.
GRIP : It is twisted and covered with a double layer of twisted iron wire. The braided ferrules, known as "Turk's heads," are present and intact. There is nothing loose in the hilt; all the elements are securely fastened.
