Oil On Canvas, Portrait Of A Dancer By Constantin Nepo, 1960s
Artist: Constantin Nepo
Beautiful portrait of a dancer in a dance leotard by the painter Constantin Nepo (1915-1976). The painting is unfortunately not signed and the only indication we have of the painter's identity is an old exhibition label stuck to the back of the painting. There is no doubt, however, that this is indeed a work by Constantin Nepo, as the painting's style and subject matter perfectly match. The painter was married to Yvette Chauviré, one of the few prima ballerinas to have received the title of prima ballerina assoluta. She was considered the greatest dancer of the 20th century. Furthermore, the painter is said to have met his wife at the Paris Opera, where he was working on ballet sets for Roland Petit. As an interesting side note, the painter also created a portrait of the famous ballet director. Note: the painting has been restored and cleaned (see the photo of the back of the painting). Dimensions of the canvas: 53.5cm x 73cm. Dimensions of the frame: 74.5cm x 93cm.
