Portrait Of Mr. D By Jules Valadon, Pen Drawing, 1880
Artist: Jules Valadon, Paris 1826-1900
In the 1880s, the publication of the SAF's illustrated catalogue required artists to send a drawing of the painting they wished to exhibit, so that an engraver could transfer it into the catalogue. The drawing presented here is an autograph, executed by the painter after his own work. Entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1846, where he won several medals, he studied under Michel Martin Drolling, Léon Cogniet, and Henri Lehmann. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1857. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français. Known for his portraits and expressive heads, he also distinguished himself in the still-life genre. In this respect, Auguste Dorchain considered Valadon "the Chardin of [their] time." Signed lower right and reproduced in the 1880 Salon catalogue.
