A JAPANESE-STYLE BACCARAT CRYSTAL VASE FOR L'ESCALIER DE CRISTAL, CIRCA 1870. The flared neck features a wheel-cut decoration of stylized ears of wheat. It rests on a round base decorated with openwork reserves of birds on flowering branches. The handles are made of flowering branches and buds. HEIGHT 21 CM - WIDTH 18 CM - DEPTH 10 CM. L'Escalier de Cristal, a Parisian firm founded by Madame Veuve Desarnaud, née Marie Jeanne Rosalie Charpentier, in 1804, was famous during the Restoration period for its crystal furniture and objects mounted on bronze. Located at 162 and 163 Palais Royal, it was taken over around 1847 by Lahoche and Boin, then by Lahoche alone in 1852, Lahoche and Pannier in 1857, and finally by Pannier Frères from 1890 to 1923. The Crystal Staircase participated in the spread of Japonisme, under the influence of its "artistic director", Henry Pannier.
