Emilio Mantelli (1884-1918) – “the Broken Sickle”
A powerful original woodcut by Emilio Mantelli, one of the most influential figures in the early 20th-century Italian woodcut revival. This piece, titled "La falce guasta" (The Broken Sickle), was published in 1920 in the renowned magazine L’Eroica (issues 68-69), as part of a posthumous tribute to the artist's brief but brilliant career.
This work marks Mantelli’s shift toward a raw, social Expressionism. Moving away from decorative Art Nouveau, he uses a rugged and energetic cutting technique to depict the harsh reality of rural labor. The "broken" sickle symbolizes the struggle of the peasant class. His style is characterized by bold, distorted forms and a sharp contrast between black and white, creating a sense of restless energy that influenced a generation of Italian engravers.
