Marquetry Commode, Louis XV/louis XVI Transition Style – Early 20th Century
A commode veneered in mahogany and lemonwood, adorned with sumptuous marquetry in a trellis and lozenge pattern, revealing exquisite craftsmanship. The front features three drawers, the uppermost distinguished by a finely chased gilt-bronze frieze depicting interlacing patterns punctuated by delicate vegetal ornamentation. This drawer has a gilt-bronze foliate keyhole escutcheon with its matching key; the lock is fully functional. The two lower, more spacious drawers display geometric lozenge marquetry, enhanced by laurel wreath-shaped pulls, a symbol of refinement and prestige. The central drawer also has a gilt-bronze foliate keyhole escutcheon, with its finely chased key and a working lock. The rounded uprights of the piece are embellished with gilt-bronze mounts in a neoclassical style. They also feature simulated fluting that accentuates the elegance of the silhouette. They terminate in cabriole legs, adorned with finely chiseled bronze sabots depicting lion's paws, lending the whole a noble and majestic air. This commode is crowned with a breccia violet marble top, its subtle shades of white and purple contrasting harmoniously with the warmth of the wood and the golden gleam of the bronze. A true jewel of cabinetmaking, ideal for enhancing a classic interior or enriching a collection of exceptional furniture. *******Period: Early 20th century.
