Large Equinoctial Dial - 14.5cm
Artist: Inconnu
An unsigned but French equinoctial sundial from the late 19th century, notable for its large size (14.5 cm at its widest point, including the two water levels). The base measures 13 cm wide, and the case 15 x 16.5 cm. The curved octagonal dial is constructed of brass, copper, steel, and silvered brass. A large compass, with its original long hand, is set into the center of the eight-sided base. The hour dial, in the form of an open ring, is adjustable in inclination according to the latitude of the observation point. The degree of latitude is indicated by a folding arc, graduated from 0° to 90°. The gnomon is hinged. On the top of the plate are the names of four major European and Russian cities, along with their latitudes: Paris, London, Brussels, and Saint Petersburg. On the back of the plate are 14 more cities and their latitudes: Dublin, Edinburgh, Madrid, Moscow, Algiers, Constantinople, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Cairo, and Geneva. Although the gnomon is very slightly bent at its tip, it is in very good original condition. A rare model of this size and uncommon with its carrying case.
