José Ortega studied from 1899 at the Fine Arts of Algiers, where he was a student of Hippolyte Dubois. In 1905, he became Antoine Rochegrosse's engraver at the Antoine Druet Academy (the first painting academy founded in Algeria in 1904). His teachers opened the doors of the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris to him, where he studied under Gabriel Ferrier. Upon his return to Algiers, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Algériens Orientalistes, notably highly colorful landscapes and depictions of the red villages of the El Kantara region.
