Beautiful Fruitwood Bust, 16th Or 17th Century, Of Seer Tiresias?
Superb sculpted portrait of a bearded man with a harmonious face and lifeless eyes, possibly the blind seer Tiresias of Thebes, whom Odysseus consulted; whose infirmity, but also his gift, stemmed from his encounter with the Olympian gods.
It is probably a woodwork or interior architectural sculpture, recarved to these dimensions, as the back shows.
It is in good condition, with wormholes on back and cracks in wood skillfully repaired with wood fillers.
It is an antique sculpture, 16th or 17th century, as advertised in the German sale from which it originates.
