Pegged joints. Dimensions: H. 88 cm; Seat H. 45 cm; W. 45.5 cm; D. 35.5 cm. Paris, circa 1800-1810. Decorative pair of chairs known as "Amazon shield" or "pelta" chairs. Fine Parisian production in mahogany with mahogany veneer for the seat rails. They rest on four Etruscan-style legs. The backrest uprights are chamfered, a sign of quality, linking these chairs to the work of Pierre-Benoît Marcion, who produced similar models with sword-shaped front legs. as well as by Jacob-Desmalter, a similar example of which is held at the Mobilier National (see last photo). A stylistically interesting model, demonstrating the diversity of influences from antiquity around 1800... Condition report: chairs fully restored. Joinery checked, varnish cleaned. Horsehair seats on (old) webbing, horsehair fabric, which few manufacturers still produce today. Matching trimmings. Damage and previous repairs.
