Head Of Buddha - China, Sui Dynasty, Late 6th – Early 7th Century
BUDDHA HEAD
China, Sui dynasty, late 6th–early 7th century
Marble
H: 9; W: 5 cm
(burial patina and restorations)
This Buddha head is particularly elegant: its half-closed, slanted almond-shaped eyes convey an expression of wisdom, its finely curved lips form a slight smile, its nasal bridge extends into two arched eyebrows, and its earlobes are particularly elongated – the latter characteristic refers to the heavy jewelry that Prince Siddhartha used to wear.
Finally, his hairstyle features a bulge reminiscent of the ushnisha—one of the thirty-two physical characteristics of the Buddha.
Provenance: Private collection, Paris.
