From 1843 to 1847, Donner studied at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt, notably under Philipp Veit, Johann David Passavant, and Jakob Becker. In 1846, he traveled to Dresden, and in 1847, via the Netherlands and Belgium, to Paris. He was a student in the studio of Paul Delaroche. From 1848 to 1851, Donner stayed in Munich as a student of Moritz von Schwind. Between 1852 and 1854, he traveled to Italy, with longer stays in Rome, Naples, and Sicily. In 1854-1855, he worked for Moritz von Schwind on the frescoes in the Landgrave's bedroom at Wartburg Castle. In 1862-1863, back in Paris, he studied under Thomas Couture.
