Son of a chaser from Lyon, he apprenticed with Fourier, an engraver for goldsmiths. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1818, where he studied under François Joseph Bosio.
In 1820, he won the second Prix de Rome for sculpture with "Cain Cursed by God."
Barye is renowned for his bronze animal sculptures, which sometimes depicted scenes of violent battles. Barye is among the sculptors who, along with others like Pierre Louis Rouillard and Henri-Alfred Jacquemart, benefited during the second half of the Antoine-Louis Barye, who died in Paris on June 25, 1875, is buried in Paris at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
