Object description :

"Mathurin Meheut "leaving The Church In Brittany" "
Mathurin Méheut, born May 21, 1882, in Lamballe and died February 22, 1958, in Paris, was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. A witness to his era, passionate about the people and landscapes of his native region, he traveled extensively throughout Brittany, from Rennes to Dinan, from Roscoff to Saint-Guénolé in the Bigouden region, leaving behind a vast body of work and a precise and multifaceted record of Breton life in his time. From 1940 to 1944, he taught at the Rennes School of Fine Arts, where his students included many artists: the stained-glass artist Joseph Archepel, the muralist and animator Frédéric Back, the painter Geoffroy Dauvergne, the sculptor Roland Guillaumel, and the painters Roger Marage and Jean-Marie Martin. In 1946, Mathurin Méheut collaborated with the Gobelins Manufactory, for which he created numerous tapestry cartoons. In 1956, he was elected to the French Naval Academy. Mathurin Méheut died in Paris on February 22, 1958, and was buried in Montparnasse Cemetery (division 13). A Mathurin-Méheut Museum is dedicated to him in Lamballe, his birthplace, housed in a 15th-century half-timbered house known as the "Executioner's House." The museum was relocated to the Lamballe National Stud Farm in 2022 and houses approximately 5,000 of the artist's works. On June 18, 2022, the museum welcomed its first visitors. It is organized around a permanent exhibition featuring 260 works, covering a total exhibition area of 400 m².
