English Lantern Clock, 17th Century

This early form of domestic clock, often called “house clocks” or “chamber clocks,” was widely popular in England during the period. Lantern clocks are renowned for their distinctive square brass frame, bell surmount, four corner pillars, and single hour hand. The design reflects Renaissance influences, with intricate engravings on the dial plate and classical column-inspired pillars. Produced in large numbers by skilled London guild artisans, lantern clocks remained popular until pendulum-based timekeeping emerged in the late 17th century.
