ART NOUVEAU - 19th Century Sandblasted Glass Shell-Shaped Bowl with Japanese-Inspired Decoration SCN25PAP001. A rare and elegant antique sandblasted glass bowl in the shape of a scallop shell with wide, radiating ribs, highlighted by a finely gilded, undulating rim. It possesses a beautiful sculptural and decorative presence and is a high-quality piece. The delicately frosted glass surface is enriched with a refined polychrome enamel decoration of butterflies and flowers, arranged asymmetrically according to the Japanese-inspired aesthetic characteristic of the late 19th century. The plant and insect motifs are enhanced with remarkably high-quality gilding, applied with finesse and precision: regular lines, luminous and well-adhered gold, revealing meticulous and high-end workshop craftsmanship. A perfectly integrated circular indentation in the center of the bowl suggests a vase-filling function. This bowl is most certainly a centerpiece for small plants and trailing flowers, a beautiful piece of tableware and decoration from the great Art Nouveau period. It is a French work dating from around 1890–1910, unsigned, but attributable to a high-quality glassworks of the late 19th century, most likely associated with "Montjoye," a company very active in this type of production with Japonisme-inspired enamel decoration. Condition: excellent, without chips or cracks, with exceptionally well-preserved gilding, attesting to careful use and first-rate craftsmanship. This bowl has probably never been used as a vase, as there are no traces of limescale. However, two small chips on the base are noticeable, insignificant and visible in the photograph, but invisible when placed on a table. A decorative piece of great elegance, ideal for an Art Nouveau or Japonisme collection, or to enhance a refined interior with the delicacy of its decoration and the nobility of its finish.
