Two Rulers Made From Marble Samples, 19th Century

Two Marble Sample Rulers, 19th Century.

This set comprises two display rulers incorporating samples of natural marbles assembled together. Each ruler consists of a succession of rectangular fragments of marbles in various hues and veining patterns, arranged in a linear and regular pattern.

The first ruler has a slightly curved profile, with a widened end forming a handle, suggesting its use for handling or demonstration. The second ruler adopts a strictly rectilinear form, without a handle, favoring a continuous reading of the samples. The marbles used cover a wide chromatic range (light tones, reds, greens, blacks, and veined marbles), representative of the decorative stones used in the 19th century.

These objects bear witness to the practices of classifying, comparing, and disseminating decorative materials at the time, as well as the interest in the materiality and standardization of knowledge related to stone.

This type of object is frequently associated with souvenirs brought back from the Grand Tour, a journey of education and discovery undertaken in Europe, particularly in Italy, by European elites in the 18th and 19th centuries.
