"Stone Raven With Angel's Head – Early 18th Century"
An imposing, intricately carved limestone corbel, decorated with a chubby-cheeked seraph with flowing hair. French School, late 17th - early 18th century. Formerly set into a wall in a central position, it was flanked by two other angels of more traditional dimensions (also offered for sale). These three seraphim, during the reign of Louis XIV, were believed to provide spiritual protection to a place, or the entrance to a large residence.
The seraph is by nature imbued with the highest degree of God's love. T
his beautiful piece measures 40 cm x 29 cm x 46 cm and weighs approximately 50 kg. It is in used condition.
This piece has been appraised by the Cabinet Sculpture et Collection in Paris,
