Floral Marquetry Box, European Work, Mid-19th Century.

A large rectangular marquetry box, dating from the mid-19th century, remarkable for the quality of its craftsmanship, the richness of its veneers, and the delicacy of its floral decoration. It is a European piece, not specifically attributable to French production, but perfectly representative of the decorative taste and expertise of 19th-century cabinetmaking workshops. The marquetry skillfully combines native woods, used natural or stained, with exotic woods, in accordance with the decorative practices of the period. The fronts and sides are veneered with stained curly maple, chosen for its lively grain and moiré effect, which serves as a background for the decoration. The top is made on a stained maple burl ground, whose natural movement adds depth and visual richness to the composition. The panels are framed in rosewood, elegantly enhanced with boxwood stringing, creating a refined contrast and structuring the whole. The lid's decoration features a highly refined polychrome floral composition, blending delicately drawn flowers, foliage, and stems. The floral elements are crafted from finely carved wood marquetry, embellished with engraved bone flowers and mother-of-pearl details, particularly for some of the floral bells, creating subtle plays of texture and light. The fronts display a matching decoration of floral scrolls and volutes, also incorporating mother-of-pearl elements, ensuring perfect ornamental harmony. The construction is meticulous and stable. The box retains its original lock and key, as well as its antique hinges. The interior is fully lined with antique fabric featuring a floral damask design, which is very clean and in excellent condition. The box is in very good overall condition. There are no missing pieces in the veneers, marquetry, or inlays. The entire piece has been carefully revarnished, offering a harmonious and elegant presentation while respecting the object's original character. The original lock and key are functional.
