""cupid" Marble Sculpture Signed Jules-joseph Alkin (1830/1888)"
A 19th-century Carrara marble sculpture signed J. Halkin (dated 1876) depicting Cupid partially draped in fabric and gazing mischievously at the sky. The statue displays great skill and an engaging facial expression. Note: two fingers have been restored (reattached), and part of the bow and arrow are missing. Jules Joseph Alkin was born in Liège in 1830. His training began at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown, followed by a stay in Rome and travels throughout Europe. A renowned sculptor, appreciated by the Liège bourgeoisie, his works were also exhibited at the Antwerp Salon between 1861 and 1882. He contributed to the ornamentation of numerous public and religious buildings and was a member of the Royal Commission for Monuments and Sites of his country.
