Silver Chrismatorium Or Oil Box, After A Medieval Model. France, Probably 19th Century
A chrismatorium is a special case used in the Roman Catholic Church to hold the three holy oils (chrism, oil of the sick, and oil of catechumens) used for administering sacraments such as baptism, confirmation, anointing of the sick, and ordination. It can also be carried by a priest to use these oils in the homes of the sick. This chrismatorium is made entirely of silver. Opening the lid reveals the oil container, adorned with a cross. This is also made of silver. Both are hallmarked with a boar's head.
