A Fine Dauphiné Mazarine Commode, Louis XIV Period, c. 1700

Discover this elegant “Mazarine” commode, a refined example of the Louis XIV style. Its subtle crossbow-shaped curve enlivens a façade featuring three tiers of drawers. The exquisite marquetry, with geometric inlaid fillets, adorns the top, sides, and front. Veneers of plum, walnut burl, olive, boxwood, and ebony—mounted on a softwood carcass—demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship.

The projecting and curved stiles, also inlaid, enhance the harmony of the piece. Chiseled and gilded ormolu mounts—including drawer handles and keyhole escutcheons—add a touch of opulence to this finely executed commode, characteristic of the Dauphiné region at the end of Louis XIV’s reign.
