"19th Century Indian Silver Betel Leaf Horn "
Widespread in India and Southeast Asia, betel chewing is a practice that dates back thousands of years and is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and stimulant properties, among others. While a lime paste is used in its preparation, the betel leaf is the primary ingredient. Among the nobility, one could find exquisite betel leaf cones, such as this one in silver, entirely chased and pierced with a floral design typical of the Indian subcontinent. The hallmarks on the bottom are illegible; see photos.
