Kilim Gashghaï Kashkuli Iran 262 X 158 Cm
Iranian kilim from the Fars region (southwest Iran), wool, circa 1970. Very good condition.
A fine example of the elegant work of the Gashghai tribes. While traditional, this Kashkuli kilim combines timeless motifs with bold colors. Thirty-six hexagons, enclosing zoomorphic figures, are arranged on colored bands (the 'Moharamat' motif). Different borders are featured: a 'comb' motif border*, a 'running water' border**, and an 'Aleh Abassi' border***. Two colored borders on either side finish this beautiful kilim. Reversible kilim. A few minor restorations over time.
*Comb: The comb, hand, and fingers represent fertility, the desire for marriage, and the protection of offspring against the 'evil eye'.
**Running water: Flowing water representing life.
***Aleh abassi: Tulip border.
The Gashghai confederation comprises various tribes. Some examples: the Bozorg Kashkuli (the tall ones), the Kuchek Kashkuli (the short ones), the Shishboluki (six districts), the Amaleh or Yalameh (workers, servants of the Khan).
