Chief Officer's Sword With Romanian Eagle From The First World War Era Of 1914-1918.
Romanian light cavalry officer's sword from the late 19th century to the First World War. Eagle's head pommel with ruby glass eyes, triple guard with portrait of Carol I, shoulder guard with Romanian coat of arms and monogram, horn grip with twisted wire. Blade engraved with Carol I's coat of arms and a gilt cartouche marked "Fabrica De Toledo 1900" on one side and with the Romanian coat of arms on the other, accompanied by foliate scrolls. Metal scabbard. In very good condition. I note some minor wear and tear to the metal scabbard, visible in the photos. Romania was part of the Ottoman Turkish Empire until 1878 and Prince Carol of Hohenzollen-Sigmaringen was offered the throne in 1881. Romania, as a nation, has been very closely allied with France and it is not surprising that a sword like this was made in Spain or even Franc efor certain models. .
