China, Canton, 19th century. Large four-panel screen in black and gold lacquered wood depicting court figures strolling in a garden punctuated with pavilions, pines, bamboo, rocks, and a bridge. The reverse is decorated with butterflies and birds flying among chrysanthemums, peonies, bamboo, and lemon trees. Some cracks and minor lacquer losses. Superb.
