A charming, humorous letter to her friend Roger Nimier:
“Thank you for the card, the New Year, and the water pump. I wish you the same. Please excuse the delay with this book. Furthermore, I feel you shouldn't be making faces at me at social gatherings, given the reputation for seriousness we must maintain. See you very soon, I hope. Yours sincerely…” In 1954, the Parisian literary scene was abuzz with the arrival of a young, rebellious, and shy-eyed 19-year-old. Françoise Sagan presented Bonjour Tristesse, her very first novel, which sharply ironically depicted the foibles of the bourgeoisie of the time. It caused a huge scandal. Like Roger Nimier, an immense literary talent who died prematurely on September 28, 1962, in an Austin-Martin sports car, she only likes speed, pretty sports cars, alcohol, and casinos.
