Object description :

"Sword Of A High Official Or General Staff Officer, Restoration Period, 19th Century."
Sword of a senior officer or high-ranking official, Restoration period (circa 1820). As these models were not regulation designs, both hypotheses are plausible. Gilt bronze hilt, molded branch. A hilt adorned with checkered ebony plaques (with a slight chip), the shield-shaped hilt containing a bas-relief of the profile of a crowned Henry IV surrounded by two antique goddesses with fasces and a cornucopia. Why Henry IV? (Well, because he brought a company of light cavalry into the King's Household around 1593, entrusted them with the mounted guard of his person, and they remained there even after his death! It is not widely known, but he is also the founder of the oldest existing infantry regiment in the world, today the 1st Infantry Regiment). The bronze is very finely chased and guilloché. The blade is engraved on the upper half, with a gray patina, and no markings. Good overall condition, with signs of use. Total length 95 cm. Blade length 85 cm.
