Pair of Louis XV solid silver candlesticks, Mons (Bergen), circa 1760–1780 – Master’s mark with crowned shield
Complete and coherent set of 18th-century hallmarks
A superb pair of solid silver Louis XV candlesticks, crafted in Mons (Bergen, Austrian Netherlands) during the second half of the 18th century.
Both pieces, perfectly matched, display an elegant baluster silhouette, a scrolling rocaille foot with turning lobes, and the soft flowing lines typical of the 1750–1780 rococo period. The silver shows a beautiful, even antique patina.
The official hallmark of Mons, used throughout the 18th century.
2. Maker’s mark: Small crown over shieldAttributed to an unidentified silversmith active in Mons during the third quarter of the 18th century. Several local masters used crowned shield punches with indistinct initials.

4. Secondary control mark: “63” (or similar) in rococo cartoucheA local numbering system typical of Mons silver in the late 18th century.
