The Laughing Buddha Netsuke, Japanese, In Ivory
This magnificent netsuke is a miniature Japanese artwork dating from the Meiji era (1868-1912), a period renowned for the technical excellence of its sculptors, the netsuke-shi. Carved from ivory, this counterweight depicts Hotei (the Laughing Buddha, god of good fortune), smiling with a child at his side, symbolizing prosperity and family joy. He carries his characteristic attribute: a large bag (sagemono) adorned with delicate floral motifs. The quality of the carving is remarkable: the details of the robe's folds, the joyful facial features, and the fine engravings on the bag testify to exceptional craftsmanship. The ivory has developed a rich and soft patina over time, adding to its historical significance.
