A Japanese Satsuma kōro decorated with polychrome enamels and gold on an ivory-toned ground, depicting courtly scenes, signed Ryokuzan. On both sides, the body features court scenes with elegantly dressed ladies, painted with great precision in the textiles and ornamental details. The side and upper surfaces are adorned with a refined geometric lozenge pattern enriched with small stylised flowers.
Particularly noteworthy is the lid, crafted in pierced silver with an elaborate design of chrysanthemums and other flowers, completed with polychrome enamels in shades of blue, green, and yellow. The kōro has two openwork handles and rests on four sculpted feet in the form of shishi heads. It is signed on the underside with gilt inscriptions on a black ground within a square cartouche.
