Empire Centerpiece

Magnificent and very rare Empire gilt bronze centerpiece attributed to the bronzier Pierre-Philippe Thomire, Paris, circa 1805.
Height = 70.5 cm !
Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843) , who was appointed Emperor's Engraver in 1809 in recognition of his services to Napoleon, created some of the finest and most sumptuous centerpieces for the Emperor and members of his imperial court. Considered the greatest bronze caster and engraver of his time, he had initially trained as a sculptor under Houdon and Pajou at the Académie de Saint-Luc.
He then followed in his father's footsteps as a bronze worker and became a master in 1772.
Two years later, he became an apprentice from the renowned engraver Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813), after whom he acquired the art of fine chasing and gilding of bronzes.
Our centerpiece is in good condition (as found).
A rare piece , especially given its enormous size.
