Browsing Stag No. 2
Bronze with nuanced brown patina
H.: 22.8 cm; W. (base): 24.5 cm; D. (base): 9.5 cm
Signed "PJ MÊNE" on the base
Second half of the 19th century
Created between 1844 and 1846, this Browsing Stag model is one of the artist's best known. In a peaceful pose, the animal is rendered naturalistically, integrated into a landscape depicted by the tree and the base. With photographic precision, the sculptor manages to capture the instantaneous nature of movement. As the subject exists in three sizes, this is the intermediate-sized model.
