This barong sword, originating from the Moro people of the southern Philippines, dates to the early 20th century. The weapon is characterized by a broad, curved blade, typical of this type of martial implement. The carved wooden handle is partially sheathed with a set brass element and features a traditional arched shape. The scabbard, made of two joined wooden halves, follows the curve of the blade and ends in a slightly upturned point.
The attachment points and the contours of the scabbard demonstrate handcrafting consistent with local manufacturing practices of the period. The piece testifies to the techniques and materials used by Moro artisans for weapon production at the turn of the 20th century, as well as the codified forms associated with social status or ritual functions in these communities.
