Portrait Of A Man With A Seashell. Naturalist. Pastel On Vellum. Last Third Of The 18th Century.
Presumed portrait of Clément Lafafaille (1718-1782), naturalist and collector from La Rochelle.
This man in his fifties is depicted in a slightly three-quarter bust portrait, with powdered light gray hair, wearing a light beige jacket or frock coat and a white scarf tied casually.
This intimate and sensitive portrait of an enlightened amateur holding a seashell in his left hand seems to rouse the viewer from his reverie.
