Symbolist Anthropomorphic Vase With The Face Of A Young Woman And Art Nouveau Headdress, 1898, Bergés

Anthropomorphic vase in patinated terracotta, head of a young girl with a headdress – signed Bergés and dated 1898, French school. Description: Elegant anthropomorphic vase-sculpture in patinated terracotta, representing the head of a young girl wearing a wide regional bonnet forming a ruff. The opening of the vase is located at the top of the headdress, integrated into the movement of the forms. Hollow terracotta mounted on a period turned wooden base. Ochre patina, with darker shades on the headdress and the back of the neck, typical of late 19th-century terracotta. Total height with the base: 38 cm. The very delicate face, with features still naturalistic but slightly stylized (long neck, thin mouth, gentle gaze), is fully in keeping with the Symbolist and Art Nouveau taste of the 1890s. The enveloping headdress evokes French regional headdresses (probably a young girl from the provinces, perhaps from the West or Southwest), in the tradition of the regionalist busts then very fashionable. The piece is signed in relief on the neck "Bergés" and dated "98," which reinforces its attribution to a French sculptor or ceramist of the late 19th century. Total height approximately 45 cm including the base. Good condition, original patina preserved. Minor wear and rubbing consistent with age on the reliefs, small chips and micro-impacts on the edge of the headpiece and at the base of the terracotta, some irregularities in the firing process, and workshop marks typical for this type of piece. The wooden base shows scratches and signs of wear, but remains solid and stable. No structural cracks, no restoration. See the numerous detailed photos that complement the description.
