"Storm At The Snout Of Cancale. Paul Esnoul. (1882-1960)."
Beautiful view of the Cancale headland, near Saint-Malo. Oil on a panel measuring 46 cm x 31 cm (unframed). Dimensions with frame: 60 cm x 44.5 cm. The work is signed by P. Esnoul, lower left. A plaque on the frame bears his name and the painting's location. It is also countersigned and located on the back with the painter's address in Colombes (Seine). Paul Esnoul was a landscape and seascape painter. He was born in Rennes in 1882 and died in 1960. From a family with roots in Saint-Malo dating back to the 15th century, he only truly devoted himself to painting from 1930 onwards. He participated in numerous group exhibitions in Paris and throughout France (Rouen, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Lyon, Lille, Lorient, Quimper). He exhibited several times at the Salon des Indépendants and the Winter Salon of Mountain Painters. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français. His panel paintings beautifully reflect the passions of this man, a lover of nature, and above all of Brittany: with its islands, its fishing villages inhabited by the deities of Celtic tales and legends, its fish auctions, the dangerous and harsh life of the men who practiced the "Grand Métier" (the "Great Trade"), its jagged coastlines, sculpted by the blue and salty force of the sea and the desperate fury of the wind. His works can be found in the museums of Colombes, Falaise, Paris, and Rennes.
