Pair Of Antique-style Engravings, 18th Century, After Moitte

An elegant pair of etchings and aquatints, scenes in the antique style, designed by the sculptor Jean-Guillaume Moitte (1746-1810) and engraved by Jean-François Janinet (1752-1814), one of the finest engravers of his time, both dated 1789. The engravings measure 52 x 24 cm. Executed in grisaille, they are in good condition and retain their original frames. Their subjects are: "Constance of Coriolanus" and "The Virtue of Lucretia"—Coriolanus, condemned to exile by the Tribunes, consoles his wife and mother and entrusts his two children to their care.—The sons of Turquin the Proud, believing they have caught Lucretia, wife of Collatinus.
