"Glove Box, Jewelry Box, Boulle Marquetry, Brass, Napoleon III, 19th Century"
A glove box that can be used as a jewelry box, crafted from Boulle marquetry*, blackened wood, bronze, and gilt brass, with a rich decoration of arabesques and vegetal scrolls, a scrolled base with stylized foliage, and a monogram within a trellis on the lid. Dating from the Napoleon III period, 19th century. This box is in good condition and of superb quality. We have its key; the lock works (though is a little stiff). Please note: some minor damage and losses to the marquetry (particularly on the lid), slight cracks and scratches in the wood, and signs of age. See photos. *Boulle marquetry originated in the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV, and is named after André-Charles Boulle, master cabinetmaker at the King's court (learn more about André-Charles Boulle) (1642-1732). Marquetry involves inlaying precious woods with other valuable materials. Having become First Cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV, Boulle's renown, combined with the splendor of Versailles, gave rise to a wealth of furniture and objects in Boulle marquetry, displaying exceptional inventiveness.
