Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin
Floral and Butterfly Painted Décor –
Period: Late 19th – Early 20th Century (c. 1890–1920) – Art Nouveau to Weimar Republic
Elegant pair of hard-paste porcelain bowls from the Royal Berlin Manufacture (KPM), bearing the under-glaze blue cobalt sceptre mark.
Shape: Circular, with a subtle lip and a gentle counter-curved rim; not significantly flared.
Decor:
Entirely hand-painted.
Each bowl features, on the exterior wall, three flowering sprigs alternating with three butterflies, and three additional sprigs on the interior wall.
Each motif is unique, demonstrating a high level of manual skill.
The central decorations are larger and differ from one bowl to the other, as is typical of luxury KPM pairs: one displays a beautiful rose with a budding companion while the other features a full bouquet of five different flowers, dominated by a fully open rose.
This combination — identical motifs on the walls but distinct central compositions — is characteristic of pairs intended for a cultivated clientele at the turn of the 20th century, who appreciated variety within a harmonious design.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 17 cm
Height: 8,5 cm
Condition:
Absolutely pristine condition.
Porcelain flawless, with no cracks, chips, or wear to the decoration.
The preservation is remarkable, especially for pieces of thisage.
Rarity:
KPM bowls with naturalistic butterfly decorations hand-painted are significantly less common than simple floral designs. It is exceptional to find a complete pair in perfect condition, with all motifs differing, and two central floral compositions executed with such finesse.
Pairs of this quality from the period c. 1890–1920, spanning Art Nouveau to the Weimar Republic, rarely appear on the market.
