“The Sibyls,” oil on canvas, 17th century
A group of four 17th-century oil paintings on canvas depicting Sibyls, works of considerable historical, artistic, and iconographic interest. Each canvas features the portrait of a female figure inspired by the famous prophetesses of antiquity, characterized by an elegant half-length composition and intense expressiveness, typical of 17th-century painting.
The Sibyls, traditionally considered heralds of future events, are represented here with different iconographic attributes and a pictorial rendering that highlights the use of light and attention to detail, elements attributable to the Italian figurative culture of the Baroque period.
Condition: the paintings are in need of restoration, with signs of ageing on the painted surface, which however do not compromise the legibility and overall value of the works.
