Large Japanese Bronze – The Monk Toba Mounted on His Horse – Mid-20th Century. This superb mid-20th-century Japanese bronze depicts Toba, a monk and emblematic figure of Japanese folklore, shown here on a journey, mounted on his horse, holding a manuscript. The sculpture is crafted in a dark bronze with brown undertones, enhanced by delicate applications of red polychrome in relief that highlight the horse's straps, the patterns on the garment, and certain details of the figure. The deep, nuanced patina lends the piece a warm and authentic presence. The horse, its head inclined towards the ground, is precisely and elegantly modeled. Toba, wearing his wide traditional hat, sports a long, finely sculpted tunic adorned with relief motifs. The manuscript in his hands recalls his role as a learned pilgrim, a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. This generously sized sculpture perfectly embodies the aesthetics of 20th-century Japan: a blend of balance, spirituality, and refined craftsmanship. Characteristics: Subject: Toba, legendary traveling monk Origin: Japan Period: Mid-20th century Material: Dark bronze with brown hues Decoration: Red polychrome relief Technique: Fine sculpture, expressive details Condition: Very beautiful old patina, normal wear Dimensions: (to be completed) Ideal piece for an Asian art collection, a desk, a collector's cabinet or refined decoration.
