"Louis XVI Period Flat Desk In Mahogany – Parisian Work. "
A refined Louis XVI period flat desk, Parisian-made, crafted from solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, exhibiting a pure line and a neoclassical elegance typical of the last quarter of the 18th century. The desk rests on four slender, tapered legs terminating in bronze sabots mounted on casters. The connecting blocks are adorned with vertical fluting. The frieze features three drawers: a wide central drawer and two side drawers of equal depth. The original gilt bronze keyhole escutcheons and 18th-century iron locks are present, along with a perfectly functional antique key. The top is edged with a molded mahogany border, mitered at the corners, and upholstered in bronze-green leather, decorated with gilt tooling, including a continuous frieze, corner motifs, and a large central fleuron. This leather, added later, displays a harmonious patina, perfectly complementing the warm hue of the mahogany. Drawer assembly: Sides and bottoms in solid oak, with beautiful natural oxidation and even, consistent wear, consistent with a Parisian piece of furniture from the late 18th century. The drawers are entirely original, with no replacement of the bottoms or sides, and the original runners have been retained. Frame and structure: The underside of the desk reveals an original, unaltered frame with a softwood and oak structure, entirely from the 18th century. The wide, irregular planks bear clearly visible marks from old tools, and the joinery is coherent and consistent, with no major alterations. The overall wear is perfectly consistent. This sound and complete antique frame confirms meticulous Parisian craftsmanship, intended for a refined clientele. Condition and restoration: The desk is in very good condition, ready for use. There is no abnormal play in the wood. The patina is warm, even, and elegant. Dimensions: Total height: 76 cm Width: 115 cm Depth: 58 cm Leg clearance: 60 cm Ideal dimensions for contemporary use, without hindering legroom.
