"Georgian Antique Eglomise Love Pendant With Cupid, 18k Gold, French Rectangular Shape Pendant"
Georgian eglomise love pendant in 18 karat gold. Large rectangular pendant containing a miniature glass painting in gold and black on a green background. The scene depicts Cupid (or Eros), as a winged youth, aiming his arrow at the heart of a woman whose body is partially draped. At her feet rests a peaceful lamb, a symbol of innocence and purity. The tension between carnal love (represented by Eros) and virginal purity (suggested by the lamb) creates a silent dialogue between desire and virtue. This woman seems ready to receive the wound of Love. The reverse is blank, with a pink silk lining. The pendant is suspended by four chains and a large ring; a heart-shaped charm hangs from the ring. A longer chain holds a key that opens the padlock securing the medallion. Sentimental pendant, circa 1800, First Empire period, Paris, France.
